- invoice flow: supplier id + invoice number + issue date,
- subscription events: provider event id + account id.
If key design is weak, every downstream protection is weak.

No create or mutate action should run without key check.
Flow pattern:
- key exists and already processed -> no-op or safe update,
- key exists but partial state -> controlled replay branch,
- key not found -> process new.
This is the minimum viable idempotency behavior.

Track processing state per key:
- received,
- processing,
- processed,
- failed,
- quarantined.

These scenarios are where retry logic design is most often incomplete:
- Out-of-order delivery: newer state arrives before older state.
- Partial timeout ambiguity: downstream write may have succeeded but response failed.
- Manual replay of stale payload: operator reruns old data after schema changed.
- Cross-system key mismatch: one system uses canonical email while another stores alias.
For each edge case, document expected behavior in the runbook. If behavior is undocumented, operators will improvise under pressure and create new side effects.
